This policy and guidelines fully supports the recommendations for transfusion practice set out in the 2016 British Society for Haematology ‘Guidelines on Transfusion for Fetuses, Neonates and Older Children’ and relates to neonates (up to 28 days of postnatal age), infants (> 28 days to < 1 year) and children ( < 18 years), however in many cases children are admitted to adult wards from 16 years of age, and for these patients the ‘Blood Transfusion Policy for Adult Patients with related guidelines’ should be followed

Scope of the Policy

All staff involved in sampling, prescribing, ordering, collecting, administration of blood components / products and care/monitoring of neonatal and paediatric patients receiving a transfusion must read the sections relevant to their place of work and role.

This policy applies to neonatal and paediatric patients at Ashford and St Peters NHS Foundation Trust who use blood components/products supplied by the Transfusion Laboratories.
